Designed by Architect Tim Tinker, and completed in 1974, the Heygate Estate was envisaged as a model for communal living. That didn’t work out and it later became known as muggers paradise. It is now in the process of getting knocked down although demolition is unlikely to be completed until 2015 due to the amount of asbestos. I went up there about a year ago after getting tipped off by someone that I worked with who lived that way, and have returned a few times more.
Photographs taken March 2011.
The Heygate estate and many other large scale social housing projects were featured in the BBC4 documentary ‘The Great Estate’ http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0109dvs
